Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based course pharmacists should be able to:

  1. Describe the role of pharmacists in HIV prevention using the care continuum and available HIV prevention tools.
  2. Describe the risk of HIV infection before and after exposure and the data in support of using Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in HIV prevention.
  3. Identify patients who would benefit from starting PrEP/PEP medications for HIV.
  4. Explain the importance of follow up HIV tests after starting HIV PEP and follow up laboratory for PrEP/PEP.
  5. Describe the pharmacology, dosing, and common side effects of PrEP/PEP medications.
  6. Identify recommended HIV tests based on clinical circumstances and the pathway for testing outside clinical settings.
  7. Describe reimbursement resources for insured and uninsured individuals needing PrEP/PEP.
  8. Define SB 159 requirements for pharmacists to furnish PrEP and PEP in the community/ambulatory care pharmacy setting.
