Dr. Kirsten Vyhmeister was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. She completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. She then went on to complete a dual degree Doctor of Pharmacy and Master of Arts in Bioethics at Loma Linda University. Her professional interests include internal medicine and academia. For fun, she enjoys reading mystery novels and non-fiction, hiking, painting, playing intramural sports, and learning the guitar.


Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based course pharmacists should be able to:

  1. Identify oral anticoagulants that have been newly approved for use in pediatric VTE prophylaxis and treatment as well as other guideline-recommended anticoagulants for pediatric patients

  2. Identify published literature and key findings used to support approval of rivaroxaban for use in pediatric patients with VTE and pediatric patients who have undergone the Fontan procedure

  3. Describe how physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) and population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) modeling during phase 1 studies of rivaroxaban in pediatrics was used to select dosages for patients in phase 2 and 3 studies

  4. Differentiate between rivaroxaban dosing for VTE treatment and for post-Fontan procedure VTE prophylaxis

  5. Describe how to switch between rivaroxaban and other anticoagulants in pediatric patients
