Description:
Sickle cell disease is still widely misunderstood and there is limited data regarding newer therapies for the management of sickle cell disease in adults. The current mainstay of therapy is hydroxyurea, which decreases severe painful episodes and hospitalizations. However, there are newer medication approved for sickle cell disease. For example, voxelotor has been shown to reduce hemoglobin sickling and hemolysis. Another newer medication crizanlizumab has also been shown to minimize sickle cell related pain episodes. This CE will provide education regarding the place in therapy for these newer agents, and which patients may benefit most from them.
