The PGY2 Cardiology residency is fully accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
The resident will develop the knowledge, attitude, and skills necessary to become an advanced pharmaceutical care practitioner in the area of cardiology. The program is structured to suit the individual needs of the resident and to provide an environment of quality training and pharmaceutical care. It offers the opportunity to experience a variety of cardiology practice settings. Loma Linda University Health is dedicated to the necessary training of competent, clinical pharmacists in specialized areas.
Post Graduate Year Two (PGY2)
- Become proficient in the pharmacologic management of patients with cardiovascular disease and hemodynamic compromise, and on the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
- Possess the necessary skills to function as an advanced practitioner in the setting of a multi-disciplinary cardiology care team.
- Provide patient-centered pharmaceutical care.
- Improve upon written and verbal communication skills
- Acquire the knowledge and skills to become an effective pharmacy educator in academia.
- Acquire the adequate knowledge and skills needed to attain Board Certified Cardiology Pharmacy (BCCP) certification upon completion of the program.
- Participate in both acute and ambulatory care settings, monitor patients, and assess the appropriateness of drug therapy.
- Provide drug information to patients, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals.
- Develop proficiency in the management of patients with the following cardiovascular disorders: heart failure, thromboembolic disorders, lipid disorders, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia, hypertension, and cerebrovascular disorders.
- Contribute to the education of students, PGY1 residents, and other health care professionals.
- Deliver the didactic instruction, facilitate small group discussions, and precept pharmacy students and/or PGY1 pharmacy residents.
- Successfully complete a major residency project and adequately prepare to present this project at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Annual Conference and Western States Pharmacy Resident Conference.
- Prepare a manuscript suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Develop cardiology care-related guidelines and provide education to health care professionals and students.
- Participate in community service events with student professional organizations.
- Give one hour of accredited continuing education to pharmacists.

- Administration and Drug Use Policy Longitudinal (yearlong until completion)
- Scholarly Activities Longitudinal (research project, continuing pharmacy education presentation, newsletter)
- Teaching Certificate Program (optional, yearlong until completion)
- Staffing (every 6th week)

Residents enrolled in the PGY2 Cardiology Residency will participate in several teaching experiences and/or the Teaching Certificate Program. The goal of the program is to provide participants the experience and guidance necessary to understand and apply current educational issues in pharmacy education. Residents must meet the following requirements:
- Attend the teaching seminars.
- Present a minimum of one didactic classroom lecture (at least 1 hour) to pharmacy students.
- Engage in a longitudinal teaching experience in the PY3 curriculum which includes developing and leading case discussions.
- Co-precept an Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) or Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE), if assigned.
- Develop a written statement of teaching philosophy.
- Develop a satisfactory teaching dossier.
