Loma Linda University PGY2 Critical Care Residency Program is fully accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). 

The PGY2 Critical Care resident will develop the knowledge, attitude, and skills necessary to become an advanced pharmaceutical care practitioner in the area of critical care. The program is structured to suit the individual needs of the resident and provide an environment of quality training in pharmaceutical care. Loma Linda University is dedicated to the necessary training of competent clinical pharmacists in specialized areas.

Post Graduate Year Two (PGY2)

Critical Care Residency Goals

  • Train residents to become proficient in the pharmacologic management of critically ill patients, developing advanced clinical decision-making skills in high-acuity settings.
  • Equip residents with the knowledge and experience necessary to pursue Board Certification in Critical Care Pharmacy (BCCCP), emphasizing ASHP-defined competencies.
  • Foster effective collaboration with physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals through active participation in multidisciplinary rounds and care planning.
  • Develop the ability to educate patients, families, and healthcare providers by providing opportunities to lead in-services, precept pharmacy students, and engage in academic discussions.
  • Strengthen leadership, time management, and critical thinking skills while promoting involvement in professional organizations and continuous self-improvement.
  • Instill habits of lifelong learning by encouraging the review of emerging literature, clinical guidelines, and participation in scholarly activities such as research, case presentations, and quality improvement projects.
  • Prepare pharmacists to embody the values of Loma Linda University Health by practicing compassionate, ethical, and patient-centered care that supports the mission of “Making Man Whole.”
     

Resident Responsibilities

  • Successful completion of:
    • all required learning experience rotations with at least satisfactory progress  
    • 90% or more of the required ASHP residency objectives 
    • required disease topic discussion listed in the residency manual 
    • a residency research project, including preparation of a manuscript  
    • pharmacy led ICU Conference requirements 
    • Code Blue response team requirements 
    • all required project requirements 
    • staffing requirements
  • Presentation of the residency research project, including a written manuscript and presentation at the SCCM So.Cal Chapter presentation/Western States Conference or equivalent platform  
  • Participation and completion of the Teaching Certificate Program (if not already completed) 
    Residents must comply with all LLUMC and LLU SOP policies and procedures as well as conduct oneself in an ethical and professional manner 
  • Active participation as a mentor with assigned student professional organization

Teaching Certificate Program

PGY2 residents have the option to participate in the Teaching Certificate Program. The goal of the program is to provide participants the experience and guidance necessary to understand and apply current educational issues in pharmacy education. In order to earn the certificate, each participant must meet the following requirements:

  1. Participate in all scheduled sessions and workshops. 
  2. Present a didactic classroom session (at least 1 hour) to pharmacy students 
  3. Engage in a longitudinal teaching experience in the PY3 curriculum that includes the development of at least one case (with a grading key) and overseeing group discussions about patient cases. 
  4. Co-precept one Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) or Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) student, if assigned 
  5. Develop a written statement of teaching philosophy 
  6. Develop a satisfactory teaching portfolio
