Loma Linda University Diabetes Management Fellowship is a unique interdisciplinary opportunity to gain experience in multiple areas of diabetes management. This fellowship is a collaboration with the Department of Endocrinology and designed to foster the development of a pharmacist interested in a career focused on diabetes. Through the affiliation with the Department of Endocrinology the fellow will have exposure to both inpatient and outpatient care. At the Diabetes Treatment Center, the fellow will participate in the administration of industry-sponsored clinical research trials and gain the knowledge and skills to be an effective member of future research teams. The fellow will also have the opportunity to become a certified insulin pump trainer while assisting with insulin pump trainings. Loma Linda University is dedicated to the training of competent, clinical pharmacists in specialized areas.

Diabetes Management Fellowship Goals

  • Become proficient in the pharmacologic management of diabetes management.
  • Function as a productive member of a multi-disciplinary care team.
  • Provide patient-centered pharmaceutical care.
  • Develop medication safety skills for patients with diabetes.
  • Improve written and verbal communication skills.
  • Acquire the knowledge and skills to become an effective primary care pharmacist focused on diabetes management.
  • Acquire the knowledge and skills to become and effective part of a clinical research trial team.
  • Acquire the knowledge and skills to become a certified diabetes technology trainer.
  • Acquire the knowledge and skills to necessary to attain either the Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. (CDCES) or Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM) credential by the end of the program.

Fellow Responsibilities

  • Participate in direct patient care activities, patient work up, patient assessment, patient interactions and documentation.
  • Provide drug information to patients, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in meetings as assigned.
  • Precept pharmacy students and/or PGY1 residents.
  • Complete a research project focused on diabetes or pharmacy practice.
  • Prepare a personal manuscript suitable for publishing.
  • Assist with preparation of manuscripts for the clinic.
  • Participate in clinical research trials at the clinic.
  • Participate in community service events with the student professional organizations.
  • Provide at least 2 hours of didactic lecture in the endocrine course.
  • Provide one class of lecture for the advanced diabetes elective course.

Teaching Certificate Program

Residents enrolled into the program will be given the option to be included in the Teaching Certificate Program. The goal of the program is to provide participants the experience and guidance necessary to understand and apply current educational issues in pharmacy education. In order to earn the certificate, each participant must meet the following requirements:

  1. Participate in all scheduled sessions and workshops. 
  2. Present at least one hour of didactic lecture to pharmacy students.
  3. Engage in a longitudinal teaching experience in the PY3 curriculum that includes the development of at least one case (with a grading key) and overseeing group discussions about patient cases. 
  4. Co-precept one Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) or Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) student, if assigned.
  5. Develop a written statement of teaching philosophy. 
  6.  Develop a satisfactory teaching portfolio.
