Every summer, LLU School of Pharmacy students have the opportunity to serve as volunteers at Camp Conrad Chinnock, a place for children and teens who are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes to enjoy summer camp activities, learn to independently manager their diabetes, build self confidence, and bond with other campers and staff. Fourth-year pharmacy student Aya Miyajima has volunteered at the camp two summers as a member of the medical staff-- once as a mentee and recently as a mentor. The medical staff is responsible for ensuring campers are safe and properly treated for their hyper- and hypoglycemia so they are prepared participate in all of the fun. In addition, staff members engage and make memories with the kids as well.
Aya says there is something new to learn during every camp session, whether it is about an insulin pump or how campers manage their own diabetes differently. Medical volunteers face several challenges because type 1 diabetes is complex, and ensuring campers' safety can feel mentally and physically exhausting. However, the educational experiences and meaningful relationships formed between camp staff, medical directors, counselors,
friends and peers, and campers make it all worth it in the end.
"This camp will have a place in my heart for the rest of my life," says Aya. "It has been an absolute pleasure to serve and be part of the medical team at Camp Conrad Chinnock to provide a safe and fun summer experience for the kids and teens. If the opportunity is presented to me again, no doubt I will accept it!"
