Dean Kyle Sousa, PhD, co-authored a research paper titled "The Influence of Academic Affairs on PIF," which has been published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. This work is the result of collaboration with other academic affairs officers across the academy. For about two years, Dr. Sousa and his colleagues met as a community of practice to share academic affairs knowledge, policies, and generate ideas.
The article explores the critical role that Offices of Academic Affairs (OAA) play in the professional identity formation (PIF) of pharmacy students, faculty, preceptors, and staff. Drawing on the experiences of academic deans in Doctor of Pharmacy programs, the article identifies five key areas where OAA can impact PIF: curriculum design, leadership, professional development, student support, and accreditation. It highlights the importance of intentional strategies and collaboration across various university departments to foster self-awareness, confidence, and leadership among pharmacy graduates. The findings suggest that by focusing on these areas, OAA can effectively contribute to the development and assessment of PIF, ultimately enhancing the professional readiness of pharmacy graduates.
